So I will start this review with a little background on myself and it will all blend together later. I grew up in the same area as Tommy as a white male and can attest to how rough life was in Homestead. I played football at South Dade High school from 91-94 and met Tommy in 92 I think it was on the football field. There was just something about him his spirit was contagious, always smiling and laughing and yes those dreads were serious. I played offensive line, the guard position so we spent some time around each other. Then the unfortunate situation occurred which was the riot that happened at South Dade in which I was actually standing in the front of one of the offices when it occurred. Tommy then transferred to Homestead High School and I never seen/heard from him again....(Fast Forward 24 years) until finding out he supported a mutual friends Toy Drive and wrote a book called Man Made Man.I and that Mutual Friend had met about a week prior to all of this happening about starting a Non Profit organization to help our Youth. I and that Mutual friend are little league coaches and have seen everything that Tommy talks about in this book and we wanted to find a way to make a difference in these kids lives. That is where the thought/plans/prayers started on how can we do that so we came up with the idea of a Mentoring program for the kids down here. A week later I come to find out about Tommy and this book and it all started coming together from the Man Above. Reading this book brings everything full circle on what can and will happen when given that love and time to a Child who needed it. Look at the results of that love/time and now those results will pay it forward in many ways. Now about this book....
**** I must say I started this book and pretty much couldn't put it down until it was done which is rare for me. The way it was written I was riding the life of Tommy Shavers as if I had traveled those roads/struggles/issues myself. It truly brought back many memories of the relationships with men and coaches throughout my life in Jr.High and High school. It has truly lit a fire now though to pay it forward as much as possible because the book and Tommy clearly show how that time Mentoring can truly lead to a better life for someone in many ways. Each Coach doing something a little differently but being affective as coaches and Mentors either way. Hopefully this book will inspire others to do the same because all it takes is a little time and encouragement and you can affect a child for life in a positive way.
The stories about your mom are truly heart warming. The love of a Mother can't be compared to anything in this life other than what it is. She just wanted what was best for you no matter what that took in life to achieve it. I hope kids who read this understand and appreciate what their parents do for them and the last thing you can do is throw that away or not pay them back by finding your purpose in life and making them happy.
Lastly, whether you are black, white, or brown, male or female, this is a MUST read in my opinion. Folks always talk about wanting change or helping the kids but never do anything about it so again, hopefully those reading this get that fire in their heart and soul then actually get out of the house and help Mentor these kids. Be that Bridge that they need to be successful. Thank you Tommy for the Ride it brought tears to my eyes a couple times. <3

This book was touching and inspiring for all men to keep making a difference or to start making a difference. It caught me at a time when I lost several important men in my life. My Grandfather, Father, Father in law all passed this year. They made an incredible impact on my life. We should always share with loved ones how much they mean to us...
Man Made Man is a well-written story of becoming triumphant from obscurity. Man Made Man has placed such a sobering reminder in my mind that black men are ever-so-valuable in our community. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is working with the youth especially black boys. There is a way out of the hardship, Man Made Man explains how.
This is truly an amazing book that I would recommend to anyone who wishes to have a greater impact on the young people that they live and work with. In 37 years of living, this is the first book that I have read that is soley dedicated to the tremendous impact that mentors and community coaches have on the lives of young people. As an educator with over 15 years of experience this is the first book I have read that tells from the eyes of a child what does and does not happen when we demonstrate value, compassion, hope, and inspiration to the young people that God has placed in our lives. More than ever this book reminds me of the intense appreciation that I have for my first mentor Ricky Mcgill. When we moved to Broward County from Michigan, my first cousin Rick signed me up to play Optomist football. Not only did he sign me up, he also took me to practice and taught me how to play the game with the skill to be successful both on and off the field in the game of life. Though he was just 8 years older, he was the first role model that I had in my life outside of my immediate family. More than football, Rick was a distingushed gentleman who taught me the value of treating others with respect. Along the same lines, all of his friends were just like him. They were all smart, athletic, and extremely good men who lived their lives with integrity. Growing up I was so blessed to have Rick in my life. Thanks to Rick I went on to receive a full scholarship to play D1 football at Colgate University. I am currently a High School Assisitant Principal, husband ,and Christian father to two amazing children. I sometimes wonder where I would be if I did not have positive people like Rick in my life outside of my immediate family.
Or like some of the current mentors in our students lives; what if Rick taught me to use drugs,
steal, and disrespect my elders by using foul language, doing poorly in school, and maintaining a criminal record. Where would I be?
My cousin Rick recently suffered a massive heart attack on the 20th of February while at work. He is currently in a nursing home fighting to regain full function of his brain. On behalf of Rick, I encourage anyone who wishes to have a deeper impact on the lives of the young people that God has placed in their lives to purchase this book.

If you or anyone you know works with young men, pick up this book. It details the young life of Dr. Tommy Shavers and the men who had an impact on him. His life is the story of many young men across all walks of life. While his story is written from the perspective of a young black man in Miami Dade, there are parallels that can be used in every young mans life no matter what your background. Dr. Shavers and I shared some of the same obstacles in life, but we are both blessed to have had men around us willing to show us the way, willing to show us love, and willing to help us become the men God intended. Can not recommend this book enough
